Why the Magical Stone Soup?

The story of the Stone Soup is one of my favorite children story.
It is about creating something out of nothing – that is the magical aspect of the story.

It is also about community.
Making Soup from a Stone is a metaphor for cooperation amid scarcity,
Finding a road between community building and sharing and individual fear & greed.

For me, “Making Soup from a Stone” is a Zen koan.
A koan is a story or a question to meditate on, that does not have a rational solution
but that can be accessed intuitively.

The making of soup from a stone is possible
when people come together:
one bringing vegetables, the other spices,
another brings the salt
and another yet brings pieces of meat or cream
and together they make the soup.

I chose “The Magical Stone Soup” as a metaphor for this blog.

My intention for this blog is to create a conversation or rather, a series of conversations around subjects that I have passion for.
For me, conversations are like stone soups. They are magical.
A conversation is a rotating dialog, a vortex that focuses the participants energy,
and from that energy vortex emerges the magic.
So, please contribute, comment, react, be passionate to your heart’s content.

So what are the subjects that I propose to raise your passion about ?

- The sustainability of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
- The use of participative Change Methods to build communities
- Moving organizations, in particular IT organizations, beyond the top down predict
and control paradigm.
- The magic of what happens when a bunch of humans sit around in circle
and have a conversation.

“Soup from a Stone, Imagine that…”
